The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has granted Mary Thorn the right to keep her pet alligator, Rambo. Thorn has owned Rambo for 12 years, and was facing some potential trouble.
The Commission began an investigation because Rambo had grown nearly six feet long, and Florida law requires alligators longer than four feet to have 2.5 acres of land available to them.
Thorn reached out to a lawyer and with his help was able to reach an agreement with the Commission that granted her an exception to keep Rambo. Thorn trained the alligator and got him to wear clothes, ride motorcycles with her and take photos with curious onlookers.
Despite being able to keep Rambo, Thorn will have restrictions. In speaking with reporters she said:
He can’t go out and do public things anymore. He can’t be one-on-one with people and his mouth has to be taped shut. He used to do pictures with kids and stuff like that, but no more.
People and their animals are an interesting thing.
