Kyrie Irving is quickly becoming a philanthropists off the court. Irving starred at St. Patrick’s High School in New Jersey, so when he was informed of 12-year-old Spencer Joyner and his medical struggles, Kyrie decided to lend a helping hand.
Joyner is struggling with a condition called pseudotumor cerebri, a debilitating condition that results in migraine headaches and possible vision loss, which has kept him from attending school. In response, Kyrie decided to pay for Joyner’s tuition fee for the school year worth $11,000.
Kyrie has never met Joyner but it did not stop him from helping. Joyner had the following response to Kyrie’s kind act:
“I never met him,” Joyner, a 12-year-old seventh-grader at The Patrick School (N.J.), said by phone. “He plays on the Cleveland Cavaliers with LeBron and Kevin Love. He just won an NBA title last year. [He was] the No. 1 pick in the Draft, went to Duke. He didn’t play so much in college because he got hurt.” “It made me feel really good and lucky to have one of my favorite players do that,”
Kyrie contributes funds to St. Patrick High School regularly and also paid for the funeral of Nixon Geraldo, a St. Patrick High School student that collapsed and died on the court. Kyrie shared the following on his connection to St. Patrick.
“I’m just thankful that I have a great support system and great financial team that allows to give back to our community and support those kids,” Irving said, “not only just the athletes but the students that we have at the school.”
