One prison worker is serving more than just mystery meat.
Wednesday at a Jackson-area prison in Michigan, a female prison food worker was fired after she was caught having sex with an inmate in the kitchen.
A Correction Department spokesman said on Thursday, that the incident happened shortly dinner service before 7 p.m,. at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center. A detention center where inmates are sent while they are awaiting to be ssigned to a longer-term prison.
The woman worker was an employee with Trinity Services Group, while the 40-year-old male inmate is serving five to 15 years for unarmed robbery, according to the Detroit Free Press. He also was also kitchen staff.
It is alleged that she was ”observed having sex with a prisoner,” who worked in the kitchen, department spokesman Chris Gautz said.
The woman was fired for “over-familiarity,” this just adds to the long list of incidents involving smuggling, and other issues since the Corrections Department privatized its food service, as a way to save money in 2013.
Since landing the contract, the Trinity Group has over $2.1 million in fines for contract infractions. Among the problems are unauthorized meal substitutions, delays in serving meals, inadequate staffing levels and sanitation issues.
Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Chris Gautz, states after separating the two of them the worker was removed from the facility. The inmate’s cell was searched and MDOC is investigating phone calls and emails to see the extent of the relationship.
Gautz says that the woman’s conduct is:
“serious and completely unacceptable,” because it “jeopardizes the safety of the prisoner, our staff, and the security of the facility.” He said “the individual was immediately removed from the facility and will no longer be allowed to work at the prison.”
“Prisoners have no ability under the law to consent to sexual contact,” Gautz said. “The Trinity employee could face charges, but that is up to the MSP and local prosecutor.”
Since taking over the contract, Trinity has been hit with $2.1 million in fines for contract infractions such as unauthorized meal substitutions, delays in serving meals, inadequate staffing levels and sanitation issues, among other problems.
No word on if any charges have been brought against the woman as of yet.
