The dysfunctional nature of the NCAA has cost Kansas the 8th ranked player in the country according to Rivals.com.
The arrival of Billy Preston in Kansas came with much hype as the five-star prospect was expected to be an immediate contributor toward a national powerhouse.
Preston did not play in any of the Jayhawks’ 18 games this season, as the school looked into a car accident on campus and later sent its findings to the NCAA. Never given a timetable for a ruling, Preston decided to pack his bags for Bosnia after signing with the European team BC Igokea.
Here’s what Kansas coach Bill Self had to say on the loss of his big time recruit.
“I can confirm that Billy Preston is foregoing his eligibility to play at Kansas and has signed with a professional team in Bosnia,” Self said via statement. “Billy’s family has been very upfront telling us that his first choice was to stay at Kansas, but with the uncertainty of the situation they needed to look at other potential options. This opportunity in Bosnia came with a deadline for a decision, and the family reached that decision Friday afternoon.
The club is part of the Adriatic Basketball Association. I’m not sure what that is either, but it’s an opportunity void of NCAA hierarchy. Following the Big Baller Brand model overseas, the contract which allows him to leave for the NBA Draft at any point. It’s a smart decision for both sides, BC Igokea improves their team, marketing and becomes attached to a potential NBA Draft pick.
According to Preston’s mother, “They didn’t have an answer and weren’t prepared to give us answers. He just wants to play.” The NCAA eventually is going to have to look in the mirror.
