“I’m rooting for everybody black.” ~ Issa Rae on the 2017 Emmy’s red carpet.
Creator of HBO hit show Insecure Issa Rae says the aftermath of her viral red carpet response in September, forced her to take a break from social media.
Speaking at Macys in Los Angeles as part of their Innovators and Visionaries series for Black History Month, Rae reveals that the backlash to her response was so harsh and negative, she had to take an extended break from social media.
“I didn’t want to go to the Emmys. I was there supporting my peers.
I feel like it’s been said out loud before. The backlash is what caught me off guard. I got off social media for a while. White people don’t know what racism is. They really don’t know the definition of racism. And that’s not a racist statement. If someone said, ‘I’m rooting for all the Latinos’ or ‘I’m rooting for all the women’ or ‘I’m rooting for all the gays’ I would have said yes! do you!”
