It has been nearly 25 years since Lorena Bobbitt shocked the entire world.
Let me refresh your memory just in case you forgot: Lorena was tried and acquitted for cutting her husband’s penis off with a kitchen knife.
Her defense argued that Lorena cut John Wayne Bobbitt’s penis off in a fit of blind-rage, after John raped her. The defense explained that the rape, in combination with years and years of domestic and mental abuse at John’s hand, triggered a a psychotic break in Lorena.
The jury agreed with Lorena’s attorneys, and found her not guilty of any criminal charges, concluding that Lorena was temporarily insane when she cut off her husband’s penis.
At the time, Lorena was facing up to 20 years in prison for mutilation charges.
In perhaps one of the most famous testimonies ever given in any U.S. court of law, Lorena, who spoke broken-English, explained her version of the events:
Now, Jordan Peele is finally going to tell Lorena’s story in a docu-series called Lorena.
Lorena will re-hash the events of Lorena’s life leading up to the day she cut her former husband’s penis off, from her perspective.
The docu-series is expected to be 4-parts. Peele’s overall goal is to move past the tabloid sensationalism of the coverage of the events, and to focus-in more on the way domestic abuse and media coverage affected Lorena’s public identity.
Peele has not announced a release date yet.
