Here’s why I am conflicted.
Russell Westbrook is the first player ever in NBA history to average a triple-double in back-to-back seasons. The feat is remarkable and deserves praise. I will grant you that much of this was accomplished from stat padding methods featuring complicit teammates. Regardless, Russ and his relentless, non-stop motor makes this feat even possible.
The counter argument can easily be made that Russ captured last year’s MVP because he averaged a triple double. If he averages 9 boards, Harden likely walks away with the award. Is he any less valuable he grabs 1 less board? Obviously not. The process to reaching these numbers has not only lessened the significance of a triple-double but also changes the perspective on last years MVP award.
On the 16th and clinching rebound, Melo is literally boxing out to pave the way for the clinching rebound.
