Former Cleveland Cavaliers GM David Griffin joined The Bill Simmons Podcast and offered his opinion as to why LeBron and Kyrie weren’t a good match for each other .
Griffin explained that Kyrie and LeBron could never be like the 90s Bulls:
Somebody has to be Pippen and somebody has to be Jordan, and I think that’s true…
LeBron can score, he doesn’t need me to score. LeBron can make all the passes, he doesn’t need me to do that. I’m not a better defender than he is. So I think you get to the point where the fit and the need LeBron had for Kyrie wasn’t going to allow him to become Scottie because he didn’t need Kyrie to fill in the gaps.
Hard to say how far this tandem could have taken the Cavs if they would have stayed together.
Ironically, the Cavs and Boston are facing off in the Eastern Conference Finals not even a year later after the trade; however, Kyrie is injured and not playing for the rest of this season.
