We are probably going to see a Canelo-GGG 3, but do we really need to? After two fights, two controversial endings, it is time for both of them to move on.
Canelo narrowly won a majority decision 114-114, 115-113, 115-113 in the rematch and frankly as the younger guy he is only going to get better.
Here is what Canelo had to say about his win.
I showed my victory with facts. He was the one who was backing up. I feel satisfied because I gave a great fight. It was a clear victory.
GGG is still an elite fighter, but he is slowing down and the devastating punching power hasn’t been that devastating when he has fought elite boxers such as Daniel Jacobs and Canelo.
GGG is 36 years old and a surefire Hall of Famer if he fights Canelo again it will just be for money because barring a knockout it will be hard for him to get a decision.
Personally, I thought GGG won both fights, but they were close enough that you can’t say it was a robbery. There was a terrible score in the first fight and while you can quibble with some of the scores in the second fight (little suspect two of the judges gave Canelo the 12th), at least they weren’t out of control.
For something to be a robbery, it has to be CLEAR. The fight was close enough to not call it a robbery, the first fight was much closer to a robbery than this one.
Here is what GGG had to say.
I’m not going to say who won tonight, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges. I thought it was a very good fight for the fans, and very exciting. I thought I fought better than he did. (When asked about a third fight) Under the right conditions, yes.
It was a great fight and their two fights will be talked about for decades, but there is a time to move on and this is it. For GGG retirement is looming, but for Canelo it is time to challenge himself against boxers more his age like the Charlo Brothers, Billy Joe Saunders, and Danny Jacobs.
