Bills Cornerback Vontae Davis shocked the sports world on Sunday when he decided that he would retire from the NFL at halftime of Buffalo’s 31-20 loss to the Chargers. The coaches were made aware that he wasn’t coming back out onto the field and that he was done with the game. The rest of his teammates felt nothing but being shocked and some also felt disrespected about Davis’ decision.
Per The Undefeated, Davis is finally opening up regarding his tough decision to leave the game that he loved that he played professionally for nine seasons. Davis reportedly told Bills DBs Coach John Butler “I went to the bench after that series and it just hit me,” said Davis. “I don’t belong on that field anymore.” Davis ended up telling Butler “I’m Done” as he sat on the bench prior to halftime. His coach didn’t say a word.
Davis said when the game started, that’s when he knew he felt different about playing. He said that he didn’t feel right or like himself. From that point, he concluded that football wasn’t right for him.
Davis added that he didn’t expect his teammates to understand his decision after some criticism but that his intention wasn’t to hurt them. He said that his intuition was simply telling him that he doesn’t belong on that football field anymore.
Since making the shocking retirement, Davis added that his brother Vernon (Tight End for the Redskins) and girlfriend supported his decision ever since he left the locker room on that day. Over the course of his career since being drafted in 2009, Davis made two Pro Bowl appearances.
