Racists nooses were discovered hanging outside the Mississippi State capitol of the eve of a runoff election between a black candidate and the white incumbent.
NBC News reports that the nooses were found on Monday morning, along with hate signs, outside the capitol building. The discovery comes just before Tuesday’s runoff election between Democrat Mike Espy, who is black, and Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.
Hyde-Smith, as you may recall, said during her support of friend and supporter Colin Hutchinson, “I would fight a circle saw for him. If he invited me to a public hanging, I would be on the front row.” Hyde-Smith ultimately apologized but not before Espy responded during a debate calling the comments, “what’s in her heart.”
“No one twisted your comments,” he said at the debate. “They came out of your mouth. I don’t know what’s in your heart — but we all know what came out of your mouth…It’s caused our state harm. It’s given our state another black eye that we don’t need.”
