The talk of the football world this morning is the no call pass interference during the NFL Championship between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints. During the fourth quarter of the play the officials failed to call a clear pass interference call on Rams defensive back Nickell Robey-Coleman who blew up Saints wide receiver Tommylee Lewis before the pass from Drew Brees could reach him.
The play ultimately forced the Saints to kick a field goal and leave enough time in the game for the Rams to drive down the field after kickoff and tie the game at the end of regulation. Patriots won the toss and Tom Brady capped their drive with a Rex Burkhead touchdown that sealed their trip to Super Bowl 53.
As a result of the blown call there are reports that the NFL is looking to possibly make pass interference calls reviewable. As per the Washington Post, the NFL competition committee will discuss if penalties including pass interference will be made reviewable via challenge flag. The reviews would take place using instant replay.
The league would need 2/3rd approval from team owners to change the rue where pass interference penalties would be made reviewable by coach’s challenge. This ultimately doesn’t change the fact that the Saints aren’t going to the Super Bowl.
