The University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Softball Assistant Coach Greg Backera apparently had a convenient “habit” of aways needing to get into the girls locker room right when it was time for the ladies to start changing.
According to the Title VII report, Backera:
(1) that he had entered and remained in the softball locker room on multiple occasions without announcing himself;
(2) that he had kissed players on the forehead and cheek while the team was playing and/or on the practice field; and
(3) that he had made a crude joke to an opposing coach that referenced a player’s vagina.
The Kansas City Star reached out to some players and other’s connected to the program, and there accounts of Backera’s conduct were even more damming:
has seen me naked more than my boyfriend has.
I actually left because it was such a bad situation…I just thought it was weird. I’m just happy to be out of the school. It made me uncomfortable.”
The women’s softball players were getting dressed when the male assistant coach barged into their locker room. He needed to use the microwave oven. Again.
Some girls would have to cover themselves or duck behind the couch, scrambling to cover themselves.
Worse, three players actually accused Backera of sexually harassing them; and surprise, surprise, all three of the ladies were suspend. Currently, Backera is still employed and he conveniently took a voluntary leave of absence, pending a follow up investigation of these allegations.
