The Celtics according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, have extended a qualifying offer out to point guard, Terry Rozier. This announcement means Terry Rozier for the 2019-20 season will become a restricted free agent when free agency begins Sunday at 6pm.
In addition, Shams Charania just broke the most anticipated news via twitter, Kemba Walker will sign the max deal with the Celtics tomorrow when free agency begins. The deal is 4 years 141 million.
Jeff Goodman of, The Stadium just tweeted according to a close source to Kemba Walker’s camp who reached out to him,
“The primary decision for the all-star guard point guard choosing Boston was a chance to go deep in the playoffs- and play with talented guys like Tatum, Hayward and Jaylen Brown. Doesn’t feel as if he has to do it all by himself.”
Rozier has a salary cap hold of 9.1 million for this upcoming season, but if the Celtics withdraw the offer, the cap goes back to the books meaning the Celtics can offer more to potential free agents. Rozier does indeed have the option of exploring other teams.
The restricted tag prevents some teams from inquiring about Terry Rozier. A franchise could offer the max for Rozier, which tends to happen every offseason where a player is overpaid for his services, and if the Celtics did not match the qualifying offer Rozier would join a new team on the new contract.
Terry Rozier is a proven role player for the Celtics who can produce instantly. You can fully expect teams to reach out to Rozier in potential signings. Bench play which is so vital in today’s game and can be detrimental to a team lacking it is a contributing factor for building a championship team. The question is how much will it cost a franchise to sign Rozier if he decides to decline the Celtics offer?
