Break dancing or “Breaking” as it will be called has received provisional approval for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
The International Olympic Committee granted its’ provisional approval along with surfing, skateboarding, and sport climbing on Tuesday.
IOC President Thomas Bach said:
“The four sports Paris has proposed … contribute to making the program more gender-balanced and more urban, and offer the opportunity to connect with the younger generation.”
Host cities have the ability to add sports that resonate with the local population and break dancing is very popular in France.
Break dancing was a part of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires with categories for boys, girls, and Mixed teams. America was not represented in any breaking category.
Judges rated competitors based on the following criteria: 1) Creativity 2) Personality 3) Technique 4) Variety 5) Performativity 6) Musicality.
There is no guarantee that provisionally approved events return for future games.
