A survey was released by National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) poll said 19% reported a coach playing an athlete who was deemed medically ineligible for participation.
The poll also showed 36% reported a coach has influence in the hiring or firing of sports medical staff, and 58% reported receiving pressure from an administrator and coaches to make a decision that was not in the best decision for the student athlete’s health.
“To think that we’re in 2019 and that would still happen is really concerning” said NATA president Tory Lindley to Paul Lavigne
This survey was released three years after NCAA passed a legislation to stop coaches from having any influence over a decision over a player health. The fact this is still an ongoing issue is a serious problem.
A new legislation will be place in August now strength and conditioning coaches will have to report to sports medicine or sports performance supervisor instead of the head coaches.
There have been numerous incidents where the health of a student athlete has been ignored which resulted in the death of the athlete. In September of 2018, HBO Real Sports with Ryan Gumble reveals 30 NCAA football players have died during the workout since the 2000s.
This is a result base league coaches are being more than they were before. The pressure to win games have now compromised the health of the athlete.
