Jaime Munguia will defend his WBO junior middleweight title against Patrick Allotey at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, on Saturday.
22-year-old Jaime Munguia of Tijuana, Mexico is 33-0, with 26 knockouts.
Patrick Allotey is 40-3, with 30 knockouts.
Mungia came into the sport with a boom, showcasing his raw talent, athleticism and massive punching power. He has been dominant nearly every time he stepped into the ring, until facing the awkward, unorthodox Takeshi Inoue in January of this year. While Mungia won by unanimous decision, with scores of 120-108, 120-108 and 119-109, Inoue clearly gave him some degree of difficulty.
Then in April, Mungia faced WBO mandatory challenger Dennis Hogan and fought a very tough fight to win a majority decision ( with scorecards of 114-114, 115-113, and 116-112 for Munguia). Some considered the scoring controversial. It is notable that Immediately after the fight, Mungia said that he thought it was a draw.
Either way, it became clear to the young, talented Mungia that a change needed to be made. He replaced his trainer Robert Alcazar with legendary four-division world titleholder Erik Morales. Mungia and Morales are looking to prove that they are a winning combination.
Their first challenge: 28-year old Patrick Allotey. The fight headline’s Golden Boy’s Mexican Independence Day card and Mungia is looking to make a statement.
Mungia is hoping with a strong performance he can parlay that into a fight with Canelo in 2020.
The fight can be streamed on DAZN starting at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time/6:00 p.m. Pacific.
