In 2020 it doesn’t take much for fans to bail on an athlete.
Immediately after Deontay Wilder was TKOed by Tyson Fury many people believe his career was over, but that likely isn’t the case. It was Wilder’s first professional loss to an extremely talented opponent, so there is no way to know exactly where Wilder’s career will take him from here.
Power is always the last thing to go and there is no reason to believe that Wilder still can’t punch through brick walls and would be able to handle the majority of heavyweights out there. Fury is a bad matchup for him, but he has put him on the canvas before, so he knows it can be done.
To win a rematch, there are a few things he is going to have to change or need readjusting.
The first thing is he needs to come to terms of why he lost or he could just make himself believe it was a fluke and things like his costume were the real reason. It would be more productive if he just admitted Fury was a better man and then he can get to correct his errors in the 3rd fight the same way Fury did in the second fight.
The second thing is while every fight needs promotion, his focus should be 100% on his trainer. Not his outfits or verbally sparring with Fury, but just getting in the best physical shape because Fury is always going to be a hard out and if he decides to keep forcing the issue with him, Wilder has to be in better shape.
You can’t turn Wilder into Floyd Mayweather in three months, but they can work on some fundamental things to try to offset what Fury was doing to him.
He can’t be so right-handed reliant because that is what everyone is looking for. Wilder has fallen in love with his right hand to the point everyone can see it coming especially Fury, he has to use it as a decoy and throw more of a variety of punches.
He can’t be bullied, he has to stand his ground and get a little dirty if need be.
There are some fighters who take an L and never recover, but there are others who come back stronger, we will see which one Wilder is soon enough.
