According to Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman, the Carolina Panthers are interested in signing free agent QB Ryan Tannehill despite recent reports of the team moving forward with Cam Newton next season.
When writing about whether the Panthers were truly committed to the former MVP, Freeman says “That may end up being the case, but teams I speak to don’t buy it…They believe the Panthers are going to pursue a QB in free agency, and the name I keep hearing is Ryan Tannehill.”
Certainly debatable if Tannehill would provide an upgrade in any area as last year with the Tennessee Titans was his best year but he failed to reach 3,000 yards passing. In contrast, other than last season where Cam Newton was sidelined with a foot injury, he has yet to throw less than 3,000 yards in a season, that includes 2018 where he only played 14 games.
Should the Panthers decide to move on from Newton, he should have a laundry list of suitors if he proves to be fully recovered. When healthy, Newton is one of the most dynamic players in the league, but it is fair to question how effective he will be post-injury, as he is a quarterback that much of his game relies on his athleticism.
