In arguably the best news the MLB has seen all offseason, the league has decided to name its first African American Crew Chief, Kerwin Danley to the position this week.
Danley, who according to Fox news, began his umpiring career in 1985, in the Northwest League starting from the minors.
His resume includes working 2 World Series, with a host of playoff series throughout his career.
What’s astonishing is that in over 150 years, the MLB finally has stepped up and promoted a minority to a position of such magnitude.
Danley credentials include:
- 1st team All American -San Diego State (1983), with a batting average of .399
- Official for 2 world series
- Instructor for first umpire camp for urban youth
- First base umpire for HOF Tony Gwynn 3000th hit
Hopefully, this will move the needle just a bit in promoting minorities into higher positions within the sport. Something is just telling me this is a way of the league taking its focus off of the Astros cheating scandal.
