Over the past couple of weeks we have seen a lot of petitions pop up to reopen cases for cops who have murdered black people and some trying to bring positive changes to the world like classifying the KKK as a terrorist group.
Some of the other petitions that have been started are for the removal of statues of racist people and the removal of their names from buildings.
Cardinals WR Deandre Hopkins even started one. He went to Clemson and wants them to remove John C. Calhoun’s name from the honors college on campus.
If you don’t know, John C. Calhoun was extremely racist. He was the US VP under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Calhoun is a known slave owner, loved slavery, and even thought it was good for black people. Clemson is also built on his slave plantation.
Hopkins went to Twitter to share his petition for the removal of Calhoun’s name and to rename the building.
The argument that people will use against this is the same argument they use in support for keeping racists statues and names and that’s that it’s erasing history. The flaw in that argument is that we don’t need a statue or a building named after someone for history to remember them.
