For years now, the NBA has been the leader among the 4 major sports, in terms of allowing their players to speak out about real world issues.
Adam Silver has done a great job is communicating with the players, openly supporting their efforts in activism, and other sort of activities that pertain to speaking out against real world issues that are dear to players across the league. However, after the NBA, there isn’t any other major sports that’s close in allowing their players to freely speak about problems that are dear to them.
The NFL has to be the 2nd closest major sports, but even then, the selfishness of the owners across the league make the NFL feel like an extreme distant 2nd. A recent reference would be the act of kneeling during the anthem across the NFL, and how the owners quickly put a stop to the spread of this act of silent protest.
Players these days though, aren’t entirely afraid of the potential consequences of speaking out against social injustice.
A group of players sent out a video statement and a challenge towards the NFL, demanding to know what the NFL will do moving forward, regarding the fight against systematic racism in this country.
I wouldn’t count today’s powerful message as a monumental step of progress, but it’s a dang good start, and one that I’m sure will leave a lasting impact on the NFL’s decision making moving forward.
