All countries around the world love sports. Some prefer football and some basketball. And some countries love many different sports equally. One such country is the Netherlands.
The Dutch are known for their profound love for sports and everything related to it. That is why they are one of the countries with some of the most reputable and well-known sports clubs and associations. If you’re moving to the Netherlands or you’re just passing through, you will be surprised by the number of people who like sports and practice it regularly.
In this article, we’ll discover what are the most popular sports among the Dutch people, and what are their most famous sports clubs and associations.
Basketball
Basketball is very popular in the Netherlands, and there isn’t a better proof of just how much they love it than BS Leiden. BS Leiden offers basketball training sessions to all ages (7 to 60) and for all possible levels of proficiency. This association doesn’t think that basketball should only be played by NBA superstars. What BS Leiden believes in is that anyone can play basketball regardless of their level of proficiency. So they train with people individually, in groups, for competitions, or just for recreational purposes.
Cricket
Cricket is huge in the Netherlands. The wide selection of different clubs and associations that are either specifically aimed at cricket fans or that just include cricket as part of their offer proves that. While the Dutch aren’t spending their time at echt geld casinos, they spend it playing cricket. De Kieviten Cricket Club is one of the multi-sport clubs that offer cricket practice among other activities like golf, tennis, hockey, and squash. However, one of the oldest cricket clubs in the Netherlands is Haarlem Cricket Club (HCC) Red and White. It was founded in 1881, but it was in 1911 that they found their permanent grounds at the Spanjaardslaan. Two other cricket clubs in the Netherlands that are definitely worth mentioning are Hilversumsche Cricket Club and Voorburg Cricket Club.
Dance
Did you know that the Dutch people like to dance, and a lot? And not just one type of dancing style. People in Holland seem to enjoy all sorts of dances there are. To begin with, they simply adore ballet. The Amsterdamse Ballet-school teaches ballet and jazz style, and most of the students are adults. You’re welcome to join in even if you have no previous experience in any of these dances. On the other hand, if you want to join a really big community of dancers then you should visit Jacob Maris. This organisation consists of several training clubs and offers everything from Latin American dances to ballroom and street dance.
Diving
Diving is something that most people in Holland are interested in, and a British Sub-Aqua Club is there to help those who want to learn more. So far this club has 40 members, that are both from the Netherlands and the UK. They dive locally and abroad, visiting exotic places with more adequate temperature for divers.
Floorball
If you haven’t heard of floorball before, then it’s a sign that you aren’t Scandinavian. This is a fast game that is played indoors by five players and a person protecting the goal. These players use the floorball stick and a ball in order to play. The rules are simple to learn, and those who decide to play pick up on them rather quickly. If you’re interested in a floorball club, then you should head over to the HDM. Founded in 2000 this club has three men’s, one woman’s, and one mixed team. Some players in this club are from Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, and Finland. And they all love floorball as much as the Dutch, so they work hard every day to prepare the best in the league and ultimately win the cup.
