Gervonta Davis will be making his much-anticipated return to State Farm Arena tonight in what might be the most difficult fight of his career, something his own corner believes too.
“It’s a dangerous fight, let’s call it what it is.” Said Mayweather Promotions Leonard Ellerbe.
What makes this fight so dangerous is Davis’ opponent who is actually entering tonight’s bout as the champion, Mario Barrios. Mario Barrios or El Azteca as his fans know him is a Mexican fighter who has dominated the 140-weight class. He is currently 26-0, with 17 KO’s. He is the real deal, but what makes this fight so scary for Tank is the tale of the tape.
Barrios is five inches taller with a seven-inch reach advantage, and he fights at 140 naturally. Tank is the 130- and 135-pound division champion, but he will be once again moving up, something Barrios feels is in his advantage.
“I’m the reigning WBA Champion and he’s coming up to meet me.”
Gervonta Davis is moving up two weight classes but when you have the power of Tank, all of that goes out the window. Davis is 24-0 with 23 knockouts, challengers rarely go the distance with him.
And tonight, I expect more of the same. Barrios only hope will be to keep him outside and use his reach to his advantage to hopefully secure a decision in his favor. But I believe Tank will land enough of those big punches to knockdown Barrios a few times, possibly even knock him out. Tank will end this fight in the latter rounds, 9-12, and make history in the ATL joining the legendary list of Triple Champions.
Davis vs. Barrios will see four-time world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis set his sights on capturing a title in a third weight class when he faces undefeated WBA Super Lightweight Champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios in a SHOWTIME PPV main event Saturday, June 26 at the award-winning State Farm Arena in Atlanta in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.
The pay-per-view telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will feature a battle of two top 154-pound contenders as Erickson “Hammer” Lubin faces former unified champion Jeison Rosario in a WBC Super Welterweight Title Eliminator in the co-main event. Super welterweight contender Carlos Adames will take on Mexico’s Alexis Salazar in a 10-round showdown and hard-hitting Olympian Batyr Akhmedov steps in against former world champion Argenis Mendez in a 12-round WBA Super Lightweight Title Eliminator to kick off the pay-per-view telecast.
