Sha’Carri Richardson on How The Death of Her Biological Mother and The Trauma of That Led to Her Smoking Weed and Being Suspended for Olympics

We all know that weed isn’t a performance-enhancing drug.

We also know that criminalization of weed which is no worse for you than cigarettes or alcohol was just another way to keep imprisoning black men and women in this country.

Even in 2021 where weed is legal in a lot of states and white people are making millions off it, black people are still being thrown in jail for it.

Track and Field star Sha’Carri Richardson was going through a hard time and she smoked. Unfortunately, even if the rules are trash they are the rules and she likely is going to miss the Olympics now.

She takes full responsibility for that in this interview with the TODAY show.

She told NBC Sports following her win in the 100m that her biological mother had died the week before trials. That loss played a part, she said on TODAY.

“(I’m) not making an excuse or looking for any empathy in my case, but, however, being in that position in my life, finding out something like that, something that I would say is probably one of the biggest things that have impacted me … that definitely was a very heavy topic on me,” she said.

“People don’t understand what it’s like to have to … go in front of the world and put on a face and hide my pain. Who am I to tell you how to cope when you’re dealing with the pain or you’re dealing with a struggle that you haven’t experienced before or that you thought you never would have to deal with?”

She added that her biological mother’s death was “triggering” and the news sent her into “a state of emotional panic.”

What people don’t understand is she says “biological mother” she is telling you she didn’t have a great relationship with her mom and then that person passes away and there is nothing you can to repair that relationship.

I feel bad for her.

Sadly, if you bend the rules for her there will be a lot of other athletes that are going to be upset and you might open up yourself to lawsuits and things like that.

This is why US Track and Field says the suspension will stay in place.

“Sha’Carri Richardson’s situation is incredibly unfortunate and devastating for everyone involved,” USA Track and Field wrote in a statement Friday. “Athlete health and well-being continue to be one of USATF’s most critical priorities and we will work with Sha’Carri to ensure she has ample resources to overcome any mental health challenges now and in the future.”
