The NCAA has finally done what many have been asking them to do for decades, they’re allowing all college athletes the opportunities to make money off their name, image, and likeness.
This new rule opens up the floodgates as there are tons of new and interesting things we can see including a current college cover athlete for EA Sports’ new College Football game, endorsements from companies, and local endeavors.
Athletes have already taken advantage of the NCAA’s new rule including Auburn starting QB, Bo Nix and the Carvinder Twins who play basketball for Fresno State.
Bo Nix took to IG with an ad post for Milos Tea and the Carvinder Twins have signed a massive deal with Boost Mobile as a part of a company initiative to sign other college athletes.
The twins are stars on TikTok and have a reach of 3.3 million followers on the app.
Today is a big step in empowering student-athletes like us to take charge of our future and achieve fair recognition for the hard work we put in — both on and off the court,” Haley Cavinder, a two-time Mountain West Player of the Year, said in a statement. “We are excited to partner with Boost in and for their support of this big milestone, not just for us, but for student athletes across the country — and for years to come.”
There are many other athletes taking advantage of the new rule including Florida State quarterback McKenzie Milton and Miami quarterback D’Eriq King signing on as co-founders of Dreamfield, a NIL-based platform focused primarily on booking live events for student-athletes, including autograph signings, meet-and-greets, and speaking engagements.
Even though this is a well-deserved for college athletes, with the new amount of money coming into college athletics, this new rule could cause a lot of issues including bigger athletic programs like Alabama or Ohio State having a huge competitive advantage for top recruits, increasing static amongst teammates, and who will be representing these men and women, and agent or the school?
There’s a ton of questions that still remain to be answered, but one thing is for sure, I and many other people, are happy that college athletes who are pretty much paid employees and representatives of the school, can finally make money.
