On Sunday in Philadelphia, Giants quarterback Jack Fromm is expected to make his first NFL start following the publication of his 2019 text message conversation with his childhood friend on the topic of guns in June 2020. A portion of Jake Fromm’s text message conversation with his friend read:
“Just make them very expensive so only elite white people can get them haha.”
The text message was made public following nationwide protests in the wake and heat of the murder of George Floyd. NY Daily News:
Fromm’s former Georgia teammate Terry Godwin II tweeted he’d “lost all respect” for him. Fromm, a fifth-round rookie, apologized to his Bills’ teammates. But Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll said “he’s got a lot to do to earn the trust and confidence of the players and everyone else in the building back.” And Fromm was buried on the practice squad, fourth on the QB depth chart, until the Giants signed him three weeks ago.
“For me, going to a new situation and a new locker room, there weren’t a whole lot of guys that really knew me,” Fromm said Wednesday. “So I was really selling myself and saying, ‘Hey guys, this is me, this is my heart, this is who I really am.’ And it’s a really long hard road to earn people’s trust, and I’m just super thankful for that family there in Buffalo who really took me in and helped me.”
Asked if thought the incident affected his standing on the Bills’ roster, Fromm said: “No, I don’t think so.” Asked if anyone in the Giants building had broached the subject to him, he said: “No, sir.” Now he will likely lead the Giants (4-10) into Lincoln Financial Field to face the Eagles (7-7) on Sunday.
Fromm claimed he wasn’t racist, but these are the type of casual racist things that white people say to each other. Fromm might not have an issue with black people or minorities, but deep down because he is white he thinks he is better.
