PJ Washington isn’t a very high-profile NBA player. If it weren’t for Brittany Renner, no one who isn’t a follower of the NBA wouldn’t even know who he is, but Arenas is right. He can make more bread if the public perception is he is a good guy.
At the moment, Washington is still on his rookie deal. When that contract is up, the next one will truly determine how much Renner will get going forward in child support, so it would be in her benefit to play nice and hope he gets a big extension.
Washington has actually regressed in his third season in the league. He is averaging career lows in minutes played and points. He is no longer a starter and is considered a bench player now. Bench players don’t get max extensions, but he is still young, so a team, even if it isn’t Hornets, might take a chance on him when he becomes a restricted free agent.
There is also the possibility he gets traded. It seems like his career is destined to be a journeyman and not a star, so the money does not flow as smoothly as one would think.
