The US Government and the WNBA have known for weeks that Griner is being detained in Russia after being caught with some vape pens at the airport. They decided to keep that information from the public because I assume they didn’t want to deal with the media blitz that would come with releasing that information.
Everyone who did know was told to keep quiet.
However, Putin wanted to make sure everyone knew he had a high-profile American citizen in custody, so he leaked the footage of Griner being arrested at the airport. Now, Griner’s wife is going to social media to explain what is going on, which isn’t good.

No one knows where Griner is being held, and communication between her and her family has been few and far between, according to TMZ Sports. Hopefully, Griner is being treated well, but I doubt it, to be honest.
