Dwyane Wade offered some advice to dads with trans children during the Met Gala and now, social media folks are reacting to his advice. While people are heaping praises on him for that advice and claiming he’s the best dad ever, others aren’t taking his advice lightly.
Side Action has more;
Dwyane Wade says trans daughter Zaya knew gender identity since she was 3 years old.
“It was a process for us to sit down with our daughter and find out what she likes and who she is,” Wade said to Good Morning America. Wade said he had to do a lot of self-reflecting to understand how to support his daughter.
“My daughter was my first interaction when it comes to having to deal with this conversation,” he explained. “Hopefully I’m dealing with it the right way. … Inside our home we see the smile on my daughter’s face, we see the confidence that she’s able to walk around and be herself and that’s when you know you’re doing right.”
This is a very nuanced conversation and many people are really equipped to have it. Some believe that the Wades have done the right thing from the beginning while others believe there is no way in hell a three-year-old knows anything about gender identity. This is something that has been argued at way higher levels than the Wades.
Zaya has an advantage in the fact that his parents are rich, famous, and have a ton of influence. It is unlikely she will have to deal with some things that a transgender teen from a regular 9-5 working family has to deal with, so it is very important that we keep that in mind.
Is Wade the best person to be giving advice on this? People tend to lean toward athletes and celebrities as their compass in life and I can tell you that is the wrong move to make.
