GGG has nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Canelo is coming off a loss, so there is a lot of pressure on him to knock out GGG. People are saying GGG is way past his prime, and, for one, for the first time in his career looks vulnerable to getting knocked out. If Canelo doesn’t have a dominant performance, his detractors will come out of the woodwork.
This is why GGG, an underdog in this fight, can come in relaxed because, unlike the other two fights they have had, Canelo is expected to win, and there is a lot of pressure on him to do it impressively.
I spoke to GGG’s trainer Johnathon Banks about how camp is going. Interestingly Banks feels that the trilogy is shaping up similarly to the other two fights. He doesn’t think there will be a stoppage. He believes it will go to a decision.
When I pointed out that decisions haven’t gone too well for GGG in the past against Canelo, he had a very interesting answer on if that changes how he trains a fight.
The consensus is that GGG won the first fight, and Adalaide Byrd scoring it 118–110 for Álvarez, should have been investigated by the FBI. It is one thing to lose or get a draw in a fight you thought you won. It is entirely another thing to have judges’ scorecards so out of wack that even Alvarez and his promoter at the time, Oscar De La Hoya called it out for being atrocious.
The second fight was much closer. It was the exact opposite of the first fight. In the first fight, GGG started very strong, and Canelo came on late. In this fight, Canelo started very fast, and GGG came on late. Unlike the first fight, you can debate who won, and the scorecards were much more in line with the type of fight it was.
Banks doesn’t believe age will be a factor and is very confident in GGG’s ability to win a decision.
