BSO Review: Marvel’s “Werewolf By Night”

The MCU has started to dip its toe into the supernatural as they gear up for the Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

They are introducing more characters that might not be known to general audiences but are known to hardcore comic book fans. One of those characters is Jack Russell, aka Werewolf by Night. Most people know the origins of the werewolf mythology. When a full moon hits, a regular man becomes an uncontrollable Werewolf.

Think Michael Jackson’s THRILLER.

In the MCU, it appears Jack Russell’s character will interact with the likes of Moon Knight, Blade, Dane Whitman, The Eternals,  and possibly Dr. Strange and Wong down the road. This one-shot TV special can watch on Disney Plus. He is introduced.

Without giving away too many plot details, there is a competition among monster hunters, and the winner gets a powerful relic that looks very similar to an Infinity Stone. They have plenty of jump scares, plot twists and cliffhangers. There is a pretty good amount of gore and blood for an MCU production.

My only critique is, and I have to be honest, the Werewolf looks a lot like this.

I am not sure what the budget was for this special, but hopefully, he looks a little more menacing than the Werewolf next time we see the Werewolf. I found the scenes before Russell becomes the Werewolf the best part of the specials. I couldn’t get into him being this beast I should be afraid of when he looked like Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf.

That said, it was a very enjoyable special and something I think the MCU should do more of. Everyone doesn’t need a 6-part Disney Plus show. Drop an hour-long TV special and move on to the next.  Hopefully, we will get more characters like this in the future.

7.5 out of 10 BSO stars.
