It was a pretty rocky season for the 49ers QB room.
They started the season with Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo, but Lance was injured in Week 2 due to a broken ankle, and they then turned to Garappolo. That lasted a good chunk of the season until he was hurt in Week 13 due to a broken foot.
That led to Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy being the starter for the rest of the season, and they had a good run. I even had a chance at getting to the Super Bowl. Until Purdy was then injured in the NFC Championship game against the Eagles, Josh Johnson was the QB to try and lead them to the Super Bowl but came up short.
All of this has now started a QB controversy. Lance should be healthy for the start of the season, and so should Purdy after he has surgery on his elbow, so most think the competition will be between those two.
That leaves Jimmy G. What will happen to him, and will he have a shot at the starting job or backup job?
According to Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan, they will move on from Jimmy G. On Wednesday, he was asked if Jimmy would be back next season, and Shanahan said he didn’t see a scenario.
It looks like the Jimmy G 49ers era has ended, and he will look for a new home.
It was quite a wild ride while it lasted. Jimmy G got paid, got hurt, and was one overthrown pass from winning a Super Bowl. People forget the 49ers were up 20-10 in that Super Bowl before the wheels fell off. It will be interesting to see if Jimmy G finds a home because QBs like him are becoming obsolete.
