This isn’t the news that Ravens fans have been waiting for, but it should still be exciting to hear. A prominent wide receiver is now Baltimore bound, in the form of Odell Beckham Jr. Yes, you read that correctly. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has just dropped news that free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has agreed to a deal with the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens are giving Beckham a 1-year worth up to $18 million. This deal was done before he was set to meet with the New York Jets, according to Ari Meirov. Jets would have hosted OBJ on a multi-faceted visit, but the Ravens swooped in and stepped up their offer. It simply was one that he couldn’t refuse.
Beckham joins a skill position group in need of a proven veteran that brings a winning pedigree. For awhile now, Ravens fans have been pleading for the team to either draft or sign a wide receiver to help Lamar Jackson since 2019 – the year he was named unanimous MVP & led the league in passing touchdowns.
Beckham joins a group that consists of Rashod Bateman, James Proche, newly acquired Nelson Agholor, Tylan Wallace, and Andy Isabella. OBJ is a three-time Pro Bowler, and a 2021 Super Bowl Champion with the Los Angeles Rams. Beckham tore his ACL during the first half of that game—with less than four minutes left to go in the second quarter—against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The wide receiver did not play at all this past season, opting to focus on his recovery and come back stronger to play for a contending team. He’s hungry to prove that he still has plenty of juice left in the tank. Question is, will he be able to stay healthy? Beckham played in 14 games in 2021 and put up 537 yards on 44 receptions (82 total targets). That’s 12.2 yards per reception.
A bigger question now, what will Lamar Jackson do now in the wake of this news?
