The week ended tragically for 18-year-old footballer Carnell Tate after his mother, Ashley Griggs, was shot and killed on Sunday during a driveway shooting on West Washington Street.
The fatal incident saw three other passersby getting shot, but while they were recovering from their respective injuries, Ashley couldn’t survive the multiple gunshots as she sadly died on the spot. The 40-year-old woman was known to be supportive of her son Carnell’s career and was hopeful for his upcoming freshman matches.
Police have not found any evidence to confirm if it was a stray bullet, a mass shooting, or a planned attack on Ashley. No one has been arrested in connection with the fatal incident, and the witnesses have no vivid memory of the car. So despite the heinous act, this case could turn cold while the hoodlums roam free and kill another person tomorrow.
According to TPS;
Carnell Tate will never be the same after the tragic loss of his mother after a crucial time in his life.
The mother of the Ohio State Buckeyes freshman was shot dead in Chicago over the weekend. Ashley Griggs, the mother of OSU wide receiver Carnell Tate, was killed in a drive-by shooting. She was just 40 years old.
“Police said they responded to report of a person shot shortly after 2 a.m. in the 4000-block of West Washington Street. When they arrived they found a woman shot multiple times. She was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Four other people were also injured in the shooting. A 38-year-old woman was struck in the buttocks and taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. A 39-year-old man was struck in the arm and taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. A 38-year-old man was struck in the thigh and taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition. A 42-year-old man was struck in the leg and foot and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in fair condition.
Police said one of the victims told them the shooter was in a car when they opened fire. No description of the car was immediately available.”
The Chicago Police Department has no one in custody as detectives continue to investigate the incident.
Tate — originally from Chicago — was a five-star recruit and top 25 prospect nationally out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, before committing to play collegiately at Ohio State.
The 4-star prospect is considered one of the best incoming freshman receivers.
His mother was excited about his upcoming season as one of her last posts was about his No. 17 Buckeyes jersey going up for sale online.
Ohio State released a statement on the tragedy.
“We can confirm this was Carnell’s mother,” the statement said. “Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened, and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time.”
There’s no word if Carnell Tate will take sometime to be away from the team or be able to start the season as he gets ready to deal with the reality of his mother being taken away rom him in such a tragic way.
Carnell will definitely be shattered, by this heavy blow, he needs all the support he can get. Hopefully, he comes out of this tragedy stronger. May his mom rest well!
