Dustin Poirier Takes Inspiration from Former Rival Max Holloway’s Video at the Age of 16- ‘Respect’

Dustin Poirier couldn’t stop himself from applauding Max Holloway when an old video of the Hawaiian fighter resurfaced on the Internet.

Following his KO loss against Justin Gaethje at UFC 291, Poirier was seemingly looking for some inspiration and the video of Ma Holloway appeared to hit his screen on time.

In the video, a 16-year-old Max Holloway is spotted spitting some harsh truth about life and himself.

He said, “You shouldn’t give up. Like what is that? If you give up, you [are] certified loser. If you try, you at least winning in your book.”

“My mom and my dad, I knew they are heavy drug users and then my dad would always beat up my mom. I think that her drugs is like her medicine, like would calm her stress.”

“The last time I saw my dad, I was like 10-11 years old and then I don’t see him after that. I still pray for him like he has no use in my life anymore.”

Reacting to the clip, ‘Diamond’ wrote, “Much respect Max,”

Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier have shared the cage twice. Holloway lost his UFC debut against Poirier via triangle armbar submission. They were featherweights back then.

Meanwhile, Max Holloway remained in the 145 lbs division and earned the UFC world title while Poirier moved up to 155 lbs. Years later, Max Holloway challenged Dustin Poirier at 155 lbs with his 13-fight win streak at stake.

Dustin Poirier beat Max Holloway once again in the rematch at UFC 236 and clinched the Interim lightweight belt.

What’s Next For Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway?

In a career of 38 bouts, Dustin Poirier has 29 wins, 8 losses, and 1 NC. ‘Diamond’ has 14 finishes in the UFC so far and is currently the third-ranked lightweight. He has never won a world title but is still one of the most recognized UFC fighters in the world.

After losing an opportunity to grab the BMF belt against Gaethje, Poirier has cited to fight in 2023 again and can possibly face Beneil Dariush next.

Meanwhile, Max Holloway is the number one ranked featherweight fighter and can earn a title shot against Alexander Volkanovski which shall be his 4th fight against the Australian. As of now, Holloway holds an active resume of 25 wins and 7 losses. Having held the 145 lbs UFC belt, Hollway has 12 finishes under his belt.
