Anthony Davis, a star centre for the Los Angeles Lakers who is now a full-time member of the team, began his career at Crypto.com Arena (then the Staples Centre) as a power forward. However, during the 2020 postseason, Davis played a significant amount of center minutes.
That could account for the player comparisons made by three-time Los Angeles champion combo forward A.C. Green in response to a question from Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson during the Scoop B Selects series on YouTube Selects. Green won titles with LA in 1987, 1988, and 2000 and earned an All-Star berth in 1990.
Green had this to say : “AD has a little bit of Dirk Nowitzki in him, he has a little bit of Karl Malone in him from the power standpoint at times in the paint by playing big and dominant but he was one of those big guys that almost was the big trend, ok?” Green told Robinson. “Kevin Garnett was someone who could be a power forward but has that perimeter game. He’s got his own little teeth and his own little niche. You gotta like that.”
Can Anthony Davis recover from the slump ?
The comparisons to that pair of accurate shooters, Dallas Mavericks power forward Dirk Nowitzki and Boston Celtics power forward/center Kevin Garnett, have been questioned recently because of Davis’ recent shooting slump.
The University of Kentucky 6’10” big man is actually a true centre at this stage in his career, unable to make many shots outside of the paint. Time will tell if Anthony can really recover for his recent slump and stake his claim to the throne of being the best in NBA .
His massive contract extensions would suggest the belief Lakers have in him to go further in his career but we have seen ever so often how players lose track of their objectives after getting that big pay check. Let’s hope for Basketball’s and NBA’s sake that’s not the case.
