In a recent interview, NBA legend Magic Johnson responded to Golden State Warriors’ star Stephen Curry’s assertion that he is the greatest point guard in NBA history. Johnson, known for his illustrious career with the Los Angeles Lakers, raised doubts about Curry’s claim, suggesting that statistics should support such an assertion.
During an appearance on CBS Sports Radio’s Zach Gelb Show, Johnson was asked about Curry’s self-proclaimed title. In his measured response, he asked, “Well, does the numbers say that, Zach?” Johnson highlighted specific achievements that he believes contribute to the legacy of the greatest point guard. “If he got more than 5 championships, if he got more than three Finals MVPs and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest, isn’t he? If he got more than number one in assists all-time in the Finals, number two in double-doubles, number one in triple-doubles… If he got more than all those things, then he’s the best. But the last time I checked, he doesn’t.”
Magic Johnson Questions Steph Curry’s Claim as Greatest NBA Point Guard
Magic Johnson’s point is clear: Curry’s impressive career accolades and records are undoubtedly noteworthy, but they may not be sufficient to surpass the achievements of Johnson himself, who boasts an impressive resumé.
Johnson, a 12-time NBA All-Star, achieved remarkable success during his playing days. However, Curry has made significant strides that could potentially rival some of Johnson’s records. Currently, Curry holds four NBA championship titles, one NBA Finals MVP award, and two league MVP honors. While he has already surpassed the record for most three-pointers made, with 3,390 and counting, Curry has yet to attain certain milestones that Johnson emphasizes as crucial factors in determining the greatest point guard.
