Giants running back Saquon Barkley is in the news after he was seen cursing at fans in Miami after hearing criticism of Daniel Jones after New York’s quarterback went down with a neck injury.
Barkley went viral after he was captured beefing with fans on the sidelines.
Giants running back Saquon Barkley was inactive for Sunday’s loss in Miami, but still appeared to work up a sweat while defending his quarterback from jeering Dolphins fans seated behind New York’s bench.
Following the 31-16 loss, in which Giants quarterback Daniel Jones left with a neck injury, footage surfaced of Barkley pointing into the crowd and cursing at a nearby fan: ‘B****-a** mother***er!’
‘Saquon beefing with fans on the sidelines lol,’ read a caption on the footage, which went viral Sunday evening.
Barkley, who has been nursing an ankle injury, took issue with the post.
‘Stop reaching and trying to make it a me vs fans thing,’ Barkley wrote. ‘I’m not gonna just sit there and not say anything while you talk crazy to [Jones] after he just got hurt… buddy knew he was in the wrong.’
Speaking to reporters after the defeat, Jones admitted that he has a sore neck, which feels somewhat ‘similar’ to what he experienced in 2021, when he season was cut short by a neck injury.
‘Yeah, I mean, it’s tough to say for sure,’ Jones told reporters in Miami.
‘Certainly dealt with a similar issue. So I’ll meet with the doctors and trainers and go from there.’
Jones had X-rays on Sunday and said he will undergo imaging tests on Monday to determine what’s wrong.
The Giants lost their starting quarterback after he took another beating in on Sunday, getting sacked six times and hit plenty of others.
What’s more, New York is still without Barkley, several key offensive lineman, and now sits at 1-4.
It’s the fifth time in the past seven seasons that the Giants have started 1-4 or worse. No Giants team has ever made the playoffs after such a start. And it’s anyone’s guess where the season goes from here, given the inability so far to score or block enough to give Jones or anyone else on the offense much of a chance.
‘Got a lot of good guys with the right mindset,’ Giants coach Brian Daboll said. ‘We’re not putting it together in terms of the results we’re looking for. It’s certainly disappointing, disappointing to lose. But you go back, you look at the stuff, move on and that’s what you have to do.’
It’s the offensive line that might be the biggest issue; more injuries forced New York into using a fourth different starting lineup on the offensive line already this season.
Jones got beat up early and often; to his credit, he battled, completing 14 of 20 passes for 119 yards with no interceptions.
Saquon Barkley was concerned about how Daniel Jones was being criticized and had to jump into his defense like any other teammate would do.
