According to reports, at least 961 birds died in one night after crashing into the windows of a building in Chicago. One conservation ecologist reacting to the incident had this to say;
“I’ve been in Chicago for 40 years and bird-watch all the time and I’ve never, ever seen anything like that”.
Here is the report;
Earlier this week, nearly one thousand new world warbler birds crashed into the windows of the McCormick Place Convention Center in downtown Chicago before falling to their death simultaneously. Animal experts have surmised that the birds were migrating south during the incident when the reflection of light coming off the McCormick Place Convention Center threw off their vision and thrust them into a state of confusion before the record-breaking collision. “I’ve been in Chicago for 40 years and bird-watch all the time and I’ve never, ever seen anything like that,” recalled a witness.
Before this incident occurred, the record for the largest flock of birds to die in Chicago was approximately 200 in a previous occurrence. Since the massive crash involving new world warbler birds this week, animal rights activists have pleaded with the city to enact regulations that will help protect birds, such as tinted windows, adding visual markers to the glass, dimming building lights, and more bird-safe building requirements.
This is heartbreaking as social media folks had to react to the incident leading to the death of at least 961 birds.
