Draymond Green Faces Tougher Punishment Than Previous Suspension

In another heated matchup against the Suns, Draymond Green, a key player for the Warriors, faced his third ejection this season. The incident occurred early in the third quarter while the Warriors were leading by five points. Engaged in a physical battle for position with the Suns’ centre, Jusuf Nurkić, Draymond swung his hand, unintentionally striking Jusuf’s face and sending him to the floor. This marked Draymond’s third ejection in a single season, adding to a growing list of on-court transgressions.

Draymond, already on thin ice due to a recent five-game suspension for a previous incident involving the Wolves’ Rudy Gobert, now faces potentially harsher consequences. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst emphasized that the suspension’s severity would be magnified due to Draymond’s recurrent behavioral issues. If considered in isolation, this incident might warrant a one-game suspension, but given Draymond’s history, the repercussions could be more severe.

Reflecting on the situation, Draymond expressed during a post-game interview that he did not intend to hit Jusuf. He attributed the incident to Jusuf pulling at his hip, leading him to swing his hand in an attempt to end the altercation. Despite publicly apologizing to Jusuf, Draymond’s explanation may not be enough to mitigate the consequences.

Draymond Green’s History Influences Potential Suspension

The NBA has a history of taking a firm stance against violence on the court, with past suspensions explicitly linked to Draymond’s aggressive tendencies. Considering this, the outlook for Draymond and the Warriors appears grim. Joe Dumars, the NBA’s Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations, has previously cited Draymond’s history as a factor in imposing suspensions.

The Warriors, already grappling with challenges, now face additional hurdles due to Draymond’s inability to maintain composure. While Draymond’s dynamic presence on the court is essential for the team, his repeated ejections jeopardize the Warriors’ performance and highlight the ongoing struggle to manage his on-court behaviour.
