Ex-Rival Reveals How Canelo Alvarez Can Beat David Benavidez In a ‘50-50’ Fight- “With a Lot Of…”

Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez now has David Benavidez as one of his mandatory opponents. It means the two can possibly lock horns in 2024 if not further.

David Benavidez has called out Canelo multiple times and has earned several boxing pundits’ belief that he is capable of beating the P4P superstar. Still undefeated, David Benavidez has already tasted the world championship and holds 24 KOs in an active resume of 28-0.

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez still holds a superior resume with more world title wins in more weight classes and clearly more fighting experience. That said, Canelo’s former opponent Julius Cesar Chavez Jr, gave his honest opinion on the fight.

In a chat with Fight HUB TV, he said, “I think Canelo can beat [Benavidez], but Canelo has to be at his best with a lot of movement and good conditioning. Benavidez is very skilled, very tall, and tough. I think it’s 50-50.”

Canelo Alvarez holds an active record of 60-2-2. The only two boxers to have beaten him are- Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, who are both undefeated as professionals. While David Benavidez is touted as the third boxer to beat him, it is still easier said than done.

Following his loss to Bivol in May 2022, Alvarez has beaten Gennadiy Golovkin in a trilogy, John Ryder and Jermell Charlo back-to-back. He is yet to announce his upcoming opponent for 2024. After facing John Ryder, Alvarez ended his stint with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions and signed a three-fight deal with Al Haymon’s PBC- starting by facing Jermell Charlo.

How Does Canelo Alvarez’s 2024 Looks Like?

33-year-old Canelo has had an 18-year-old pro journey till now. He made his professional debut at the age of 15 and has been one of the most active champions of this generation. He hasn’t talked much about retirement but considering his long career in the sport, Canelo may not stay around till his 40s.

After the first PBC fight against Jermell Charlo, he should face David Benavidez. Both the fighters are in the same promotion and it wouldn’t be hard to out them against each other. It is also a fan-favorite fight. Now, everything remains on when Canelo announces his next fight and opponent.
