Before their divisional-round meeting this weekend, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has annihilated Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
This week, the defensive standout made a jab at Mayfield, implying that he isn’t a very good quarterback. He said according to Detroit Free Press.
“If you give that Tampa group a good quarterback, that’s a great group. Evans, Godwin, (Russell) Gage, that’s a great group. I played against them for real,”
Naturally, Mayfield and the Bucs benefited from a poor NFC South this season, but it would be unfair to undervalue his impact—especially in light of the fact that he led the team to a 5-1 season finale and destroyed the reigning NFC Champions in the previous round.
When reporters questioned Mayfield about Gardner-Johnson’s remarks on Wednesday, he had the ideal retort, pointing out that the defense couldn’t be watching film since he would have known that Russell Gage hasn’t taken a snap this season.
