ESPN sources have shared that Canelo Alvarez, one of boxing’s top stars, and Premier Boxing Champions have agreed to part ways with two fights remaining on his three-fight deal signed in June. In September, Alvarez defeated Jermell Charlo by unanimous decision, retaining his undisputed super middleweight championship, marking the first fight of his PBC partnership.
The agreement called for Alvarez to fight Jermell Charlo’s twin brother, Jermall, on May 4. However, sources say that Canelo and PBC couldn’t agree on the terms for the Cinco de Mayo weekend matchup, allowing Alvarez to explore other options contractually going forward.
Sources have also mentioned that the third fight of the deal was set to take place against a mutually-agreed-upon opponent.
There is a great deal of public interest in seeing Alvarez, who is currently 33 years old, fight David Benavidez, a boxer who is affiliated with PBC, or even Terrence Crawford. However, Canelo has not yet displayed any interest in doing so. Nevertheless, his legacy is secure.
Prior to his victory over Charlo, Alvarez won a decision victory over Ryder in Mexico in May. In both fights, Alvarez scored knockdowns.
