The most well-known player who could be dealt before Thursday’s NBA Trade Deadline is guard Dejounte Murray of the Atlanta Hawks.
Although the Los Angeles Lakers are among the teams interested in signing Murray, the San Antonio Spurs have also expressed interest in having the former All-Star return to the city where launched his professional career.
According to CBS Sports, the Spurs should consider trading for Murray. According to CBS,
“A Murray reunion makes some basketball sense here,” “The Spurs know what to expect (and possibly how to get the best defense out of him), and they have an advantage over the field in that they can send the Hawks some of their own draft picks back, which matters quite a bit for a team that might need to tank in the next few years.”
In June 2022, the Spurs traded Murray to the Hawks in exchange for Danilo Gallinari and several first-round selections, but Atlanta hasn’t benefited from the transaction. The previous season, the squad was unable to get past the first round of the playoffs. Murray has been shopped during this deadline run for that reason, and the Spurs have a good motive to sign him.
A trade for Murray would address some of San Antonio’s remaining concerns regarding their point guard situation. Together with Victor Wembanyama, he would create a partnership that would help the Spurs regain their relevance.
