Brock Purdy is young, fabulous and on way to be seriously rich. The San Francisco 49ers are now in one of the league’s most advantageous situations. With a quarterback that has performed at an All-Pro level with a seventh-round rookie scale contract, the Niners have assembled one of the greatest rosters in the NFL around him thanks to his tiny pay compared to other starters.
However, that may not remain the case for very long. Next offseason, Brock Purdy will be eligible for an extension, and if he performs anywhere near as well as he did in his first two seasons, he will be entitled to a huge contract. Jed York, the owner of the 49ers, is not concerned about that creating issues.
Jed York speaks about imminent Brock Purdy contract
York stated, as reported by The Mercury News, during the NFL’s annual owners meetings. York appears to be well aware that good quarterbacks simply operate in this manner. It’s not always about how good a quarterback is in comparison to other quarterbacks in the league. The only thing that counts is that, due to the importance of quarterbacks, whoever is next in line for a deal has a great deal of leverage.
Naturally, York won’t be the one doing the real bargaining with Purdy. That kind of thing is handled by the Niners front office. He told The Mercury News,
“It’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league,”
“It’s what the market is. Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before,” “I don’t know how many players are making over $40 million (annually) as a quarterback right now.” “There’s a lot of planning that goes into it. I’m glad we have Paraag (Marathe), J.L. (John Lynch), Kyle (Shanahan). They’re the ones that are going to figure out the details of it, and I just have to sign the check. My part in that is kind of easy.”
