Before the naming contract expired, the stadium housing the Washington Commanders was known as FedEx Field. As a result, it will now be referred to as Commanders Field (per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post).

Although the shipping corporation exercised an opt-out mechanism in the agreement before the end of 2023, the original naming rights arrangement with FedEx was scheduled to expire in 2026 (via Jhabvala and Mark Maske of The Washington Post). Instead, the field will go by the same name as the team for the time being.

What’s the future partnership between FedEx and Commanders ?
FedEx’s independent association with the team endures despite the company’s decision to terminate the naming-rights agreement. Jhabvala and Maske claim that FedEx’s decision to use the opt-out clause resulted from the team’s July 2023 sale. A group led by Josh Harris paid $6.05 billion for the Commanders.
It might not be the modified field name for very long. In a statement to the Washington Post, the team disclosed that they are already in the process of looking into new naming rights partners.
“We have already started the process of identifying our next stadium naming rights partner — a partner who will play a crucial role in ushering in the next era of not only Commanders football, but also a robust slate of top live events and concerts.”
The team is now working to have a new stadium constructed under the new ownership group. The site in the future is still unknown. Commanders have committed over $75 million in targeted investments to enhance the stadium and fan experience since the team’s acquisition. On Tuesday, they unveiled more improvements to the current stadium.
This features enhanced food and beverage service at Commanders Field, which has been renamed, as well as better sound quality.
