Broncos Quarterback Russell Wilson Will Be Cut by Next Week, Per NFL Insiders

Russell Wilson‘s time as a Denver Bronco is running out, and an announcement is anticipated very soon.

People in the NFL believe the Broncos are getting ready to cut Wilson by next week, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

This is consistent with remarks made by head coach Sean Payton on Tuesday in Indianapolis during the NFL scouting combine. According to him, a decision is expected “within the next two weeks.”

The Broncos can only wait until March 17 at the latest to release Wilson. His $37 million injury guarantee for the 2025 campaign becomes fully guaranteed on that date.

Broncos waiting for offers for Russell Wilson?

General manager George Paton stated the organization hasn’t received any bids, which allayed any hopes that Denver might be able to locate a team in dire need of a quarterback in order to trade for Wilson. Paton said,

“I haven’t heard anything from any teams,”  “We’ll see.”

The Broncos will pay a heavy price to let go of Wilson. They will take on a dead-cap hit of $85 million, but if he is declared a post-June 1 cut, they can spread that over two seasons.

The Green Bay Packers, in contrast, incurred a $40.3 million dead-cap expense following the trade of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets in the previous season. With $78.6 million in dead cap money, the Los Angeles Rams had the highest amount of any team in the league. Following a terrible debut season in Denver, Wilson experienced a notable comeback in 2023. Before being benched for the final two games, he finished the season with 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and a 66.4 completion percentage through 15 starts.
