Dr. Laith M. Jazrawi, the Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at NYU Langone Orthopedics has weighed in on Jayden Daniels’ elbow situation, offering expert insights that might surprise you. From dissecting the mechanics to predicting the prognosis, Dr. Jazrawi’s analysis brings a whole new angle to the table—well, more of an elbow bend.
Jayden Daniels, a rising football star, was captured in a moment that sparked speculation about a potential injury. Dr. Jazrawi highlighted that the angle at which Daniels’ elbow was bent could indicate possible stress on the joint.
The Post asked Dr. Laith M. Jazrawi, the Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at NYU Langone Orthopedics, for his opinion on what was going on with the 23-year-old’s elbow and what it might mean.
“He has olecranon bursitis,” Dr. Jazrawi believes.
The doctor described the symptoms as swelling and “sometimes pain, sometimes no pain.”
How does one fix this issue?
“You can get a cortisone injection, or you can surgically remove the bursa,” Dr. Jazrawi said.
“The downtime for something like that is two-to-three weeks for a bursa excision, or you can play the whole season with it because it’s generally not that painful.”
He could not remember a situation like this causing a lasting issue for an athlete.
“It’s surgically corrected. It’s not a reconstruction or a ligament repair,” Dr. Jazrawi continued.
“It’s nothing you need to wait on healing time. It’s really, you take it out and you’re fine. And it’s not even painful to begin with for some people, which likely includes Daniels, because he had it and he wasn’t complaining. It sounds like he played pretty well.”
Daniels threw for 3,812 yards with 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions at LSU last season, and won the Heisman trophy for his exploits.
He is likely to be a top-three pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and could conceivably go as high as second overall, with Drake Maye being the other possibility.
Understanding the impact on Daniels’ performance and the preventive measures highlighted has shed light on the importance of elbow health for athletes. Looking ahead, these insights could revolutionize how athletes care for their joints, setting a new standard for sports medicine practices. Remember, an elbow a day keeps the doctor away – well, not quite, but taking care of your joints is no joke!
