Jaime Munguia expressed disinterest in the substantial purse offered for his fight against Canelo. Despite the significant sum, Munguia remains focused on his fighting skills rather than the monetary rewards.
While many athletes are lured by lucrative offers, Munguia’s indifference towards the hefty purse demonstrates a unique perspective. His emphasis on skill development and performance excellence sets him apart from those solely motivated by financial incentives.
Munguía spoke to ESPN claiming “Obviously, without a doubt, it’s the best purse, but thank God I’ve done very well and I’m not surprised, I’m not impressed. What matters to me is to go, give a good fight and win, because what’s coming is going to be much better.”
About the actual fight he said “It’s going to be a much better fight than everyone imagines, I’m preparing myself quite a bit and you’re going to see my best performance. Sometimes I feel I’ve been underestimated, but we have to prove it, we have to earn our place.”
Meanwhile, Oscar de la Hoya recently claimed that he was part of the strategy that “cornered” Canelo to fight Jaime Munguia, claiming that Canelo did not have much of a choice, if he did not want to fight Benavidez or Charlo, he had to fight Munguía.
“Canelo really had no choice. He wasn’t going to fight (Jermell) Charlo, he wasn’t going to fight (David) Benavidez. So we cornered him to fight Jaime Munguia and the plan worked,” he said in an interview with KO Artist Sports.
De la Hoya explained the reason for “cornering” Canelo to face Jaime Munguía “Take a look, Canelo is now 33 or 34, Munguia 26 or thereabouts. Remember Chavez with me, or when Canelo fought Cotto, it’s like this could mark a change. This is the beauty of boxing, you never know what is going to happen, but today I am happy that Canelo has given Munguia the opportunity and it is up to the fighter to take advantage of it,” said de la Hoya in the interview.
The arena is set for a showdown that promises to be nothing short of electrifying. As Munguia gears up to face the biggest challenge of his career, the stakes are high, and the thrill is palpable. The clash of styles, experience levels, and mindsets will undoubtedly make this matchup one for the books. So, grab your popcorn and get ready to witness a battle that could go down in boxing history!
